Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast Round 2

Dane Reynolds Leads Charge In Round Two At Quiksilver Pro presented by LG Mobile
The Quiksilver Pro presented by LG Mobile roared back to life after six lay-days today, with the first half of round two staged in clean 1-metre beach break waves at Duranbah Beach.
An afternoon swell increase allowed organizers to relocate to the main contest site of Snapper Rock to hold the remaining 8 heats of round two in point break waves.
World no.2 Bede Durbidge (Currumbin, Aus) and world no.4 Joel Parkinson (Coolangatta, Aus) put their Quiksilver Pro campaigns back on track after opening round losses.
The afternoon action was equally impressive with American ace Dane Reynolds scoring the first 10 point ride at the season-opening ASP men’s world tour event in his round two heat against 2009 rookie Nathaniel Curran.
Putting it all on the line, Reynolds pulled off a huge grab-rail air ahead of an air reverse to lock in the first perfect ride of the event.
Reynolds finishing with a two-wave combined total of an 18.83 to Curran’s 13.24 to easily advance through to round three.
When round three commences, American star CJ Hobgood will take on Hawaiian Dustin Barca in the opening heat.
Other big round three match-ups include 9 x world champion Kelly Slater vs. event wildcard Julian Wilson, world no.2 Bede Dubidge vs. Burleigh Heads ripper Jay Thompson, Snapper star Joel Parkinson vs. Portugal’s Tiago Pires and 2007 world champion Mick Fanning vs. Hawaiian Kekoa Bacalso.

The opening day of the 2009 ASP World Tour season got underway, with the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by LG completing Round 1 in clean two-to-three foot (1 metre) waves at the backup venue of Duranbah Beach.
Jeremy Flores, 20, Dream Tour No. 10 in 2008, had opened the contest early in the day in Heat 1 of Round 1 besting former event winner Dean Morrison (Gold Coast, AUS) and Hawaiian rookie Dustin Barca (Kauai, HAW). Flores, who has been Europe's undisputed surf leader for three years now, found one of the few barrels of the day to secure his lead and advance despite his ankle hurting him.
"I just wanted to get a few waves quickly and take the lead and that's what I did so I am happy," Flores said. "That little barrel put me ahead and I was lucky to be there at the right time. You never want to lose that first heat so it’s all good."
Kelly Slater (USA), 37, reigning and nine-time ASP World Champion, took to experimenting with his equipment during Round 1, opting to ride an unconventional self-shaped, 5’4” round-tail quad en route to victory over Dayyan Neve (AUS), 30, and Daniel Wills (AUS), 33.
Miky Picon (Capbreton, FRA) and Aritz Aranburu (Zarautz, EUK) were not able to get away with a win in their respective heats and will surf Round 2 when competition resumes on the Gold Coast of Australia.
